What it is
A naturally occurring aluminum silicate formed through extensive tropical weathering, right here in Trinidad. The yellowish-brown colour comes from iron oxides. When fired, it develops a distinctive pinkish-orange hue. Unlike pure white China clay, it has a warm, earthy character — smooth, fine-grained, with a creamy feel when wet.

Processing & purity
Every batch is carefully processed by hand to remove stones, twigs, and solid impurities. The result is a clean, consistent clay — no grit surprises, no wasted time picking debris out of your hands. This is the difference between artist-grade material and something scooped from the ground.

Sold in 5 lb increments — 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 lb bags. Each bag is packaged in a sealed kraft pouch to keep the clay damp and workable for months. Minimum order: 5 lb.
Questions & answers
What temperature can I fire it to?
This clay works best in the low-fire range (cone 06 to cone 04, roughly 999–1063°C / 1830–1945°F). It develops its signature pinkish-orange colour in that range. Fire hotter and you risk over-vitrification. If you're testing for the first time, start with a small piece.
How do I store it?
Keep the bag sealed. Once opened, wrap tightly in plastic and store in a cool, shaded spot. If it dries out, add small amounts of water and knead — this clay rehydrates well. Stored properly, it stays workable indefinitely.
Is it food-safe when fired?
In its natural fired state, this clay is not food-safe for holding liquids or food. For any piece meant to hold food or drink, apply a properly formulated food-safe glaze and fire to the glaze manufacturer's specifications. It's excellent for decorative, sculptural, and dry-goods pieces without glazing.
Can I use it for mud masks?
Kaolin has a long tradition in cosmetic and skincare use, and this clay has been cleaned of visible solid impurities. That said, we sell it as an art and craft material — not as a certified cosmetic product. If you're using it on skin, do a patch test first, and know that this is a raw natural material, not a formulated cosmetic.
How much do I need for a project?
A rough guide: 5 lb makes several small pots or a medium sculpture. 10–15 lb is a good starting order for a first-time potter. 25 lb is enough for a substantial project or a classroom session. If you're unsure, start with 5 lb and reorder.
